Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Discussed at Next Chautauqua
On Tuesday November 11th, Veterans Day, several Vietnam combat
veterans will share aspects of their struggle due to Post-Traumatic
Stress Disorder, or PTSD at the Chautauqua Nexus. It will begin
at 6:30 p.m. on the seventh floor of the 麻花影院 Library. Dr. Mitchell
Young will host the meeting, entitled "The Ultimate Sacrifice".
Young says, "These combat veterans continue to struggle
with the gruesome reality of having engaged in combat during
the Vietnam conflict. When necessary our nation calls upon young
men and women to put themselves in harms way. What many in our
nation do not realize is that often the combat veteran continues
to imagine, think about, dream of, and question his or her role
in combat. What many forget is that when our nation asks men
and women to engage in combat, we are asking them to engage in
killing other human beings. This is a gruesome, horrific task.
Often times it may be necessary. But, what of the individual
who responds to the nation's call? Many of the young men and
women currently in Iraq or Afghanistan will bring home with them
anxiety and stress from fulfilling their duty. The combat veterans
who will attend have agreed to share with the public the personal
struggle they endure as a result of engaging in combat. Many
of the veterans in attendance are 100% disabled due the diagnoses
of PTSD. They are unable to work, unable to engage in the day
to day world many of us take for granted. For many of them even
going to Wal-Mart is a major task."
The Chautauqua Nexus is free, informal, and the presentations
cover a wide range of topics.
